Well I made it through week #1. Didn't know that casual friday existed, so everyone, literally, EVERYONE was in jeans, but me! Trying to learn a lot of finance and actually apply it has been difficult. I feel like as soon as I start to feel comfortable with a topic, something comes along to knock me down a few pegs.
I feel like I just started college again and have no clue waht to do about anything! I know it will pass, but I want to do well and this is just frustrating me immensely!
Right, so until September 2008, actually September 27, 2008, I am not allowed to buy anymore yarn. It is stash busting time, and well, I need to save $ for the wedding. Plus, I am totally addicted to knitting socks! So far, I have finished the following:
A pair of RPM socks from knitty.com knit using magic loop and out of Koigu KPPPM,
A pair of hot pink fetchings, knit using magic loop and debbie bliss cashmerino aran,
And the first sock of a pair of Cookie A's BFF socks, knit using magic loop and out of koigu KPPPM.
Things that are planned to be knit,
- anthropologie inspired capelet
- wicked sweater - just waiting on size 7 needles
- more socks
- more fetchings
I managed to take a few pics of yarn I received for xmas, or purchased on 12/31/07 (stash busting started jan 1, 2008), and some that has been marinating in the stash for a while.
I've decided to go Wheat/Gluten Free with my diet. So far it is working out well. I made this decision because there is a wheat/gluten sensitivity in my family - my one nephew is in fact allergic to both, as well as soy. I find that I feel more together and my blood sugar seems to be more stable. Plus, losing 5lbs right off the bat always helps ;)
Wedding wise, we have met with a photographer, probably the one we will go with, an have scheduled a meeting with the DJ for the reception. Soon I will have to start looking for my dress, but I'm trying to slim down a little more before that happens! Things are going smoothly, but this stuff is expensive, makes me fear for when/if my children decide to get married (when we have kids that is).
Okay, Thursday is my interview at the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board in Harrisburg. This is really just for more interview practice, since I really need to be heading to NY to be with my bb. Then, at some point next week, I have TWO, yes TWO, phone interviews, one through my darling recruiter from SmithHanley, and the other is with AC Neilsen for two different positions in Connecticut - Stamford and Fairfield. This means the move to White Plains may actually happen (!) and then we will have the equidistant place between our two commutes.
The boy received a raise at marvel, and hopefully in 3 months he will be full time. This whole thing is finally settling in nicely and working out as his lease is up Jan 1. Yes this does mean that the wedding planning is going to be a bit different, but the people at La Massaria are more than helpful! But seriously, this wedding gown thing needs to start happening soon, I'm not where I'd like to be weight wise, but it'll happen.
Knitting wise, I finished my first pair of grown up socks (read: not footies and not simple ribbed) and they are wonderful. Carolyn's socks will be sent tomorrow - sending footies to florida! And everyone elses presents are coming along nicely. I need to buy some soft yarn to make McKenna a cute little scarf and a hat - how cute will this 2 year old get? Super cute! Fortunately, there is no real xmas knitting list. YES I can't believe it.
I did knit yesterday. On size 11 bamboo needles. They feel ginormous compared to my size 1 addi lace turbos. Managed to finish the scarf I've been working on since last year, soak in some Soak along with the leg warmers for Erika's birthday. Today, I'm hoping to get to the toe of my first Charade. I'm only like 2 inches away from the 2" mark for the decrease so it should not be too bad...
Okay it's time to leave the office, I've gotten myself annoyed at the Hydrant maintanence program enough. I have to retake some photos then go home.
I'll be in Florida next week with the lovely New Age Amazon and I just cannot wait. Not that I haven't been really relaxing the last 3 months but, this is a vacation. While I am away my little car needs to go to the shop, the fuse I had replaced in early May has already blown again which probably means a huge electrical problem (from the manual I swear) and I'm just concerned because my headlights dim at times and the key is smokin hot when it is removed after a somewhat normal drive (say, 10 miles from my house to my brother's office). Also, it needs to go to the body shop since Honda will not rehang my bumper (Apparently, Piazza - Pottstown location doesn't have an auto-body shop there, so hence the 2 stops).
Still no job, but this is due to vacation time. If only I had given my info to Smith Hanley before I graduated I probably would not be unemployed at this time. Oh well, September is looking good. Another job ad was in the inquirer today for GSK so another priority mail resume/cover letter will be going out on Monday. To pass the time though, I've been answering phones/errands/and just being office support at my brother's work which is an environmental contracting firm. Evironmental contracting deals with water treatment mostly, so most of our work is at waste water treatment plants, so I get to learn about things like Muffin Monsters - google it.
Knitting wise, the socks continue to go well, I'm on the foot of mom's second sock and then will be starting in on my second anklet. Florida will bring a lot of sock knitting due to the heat! I also need to get my SKS and MSKS books spiral bound so I can attempt an actual pretty sock! I totally decided today that I need a circular needle organizer, a blocking board from WEBS, and a jordana paige knitting satchel in cappuccino - these are all things that will be on my xmas list, so hopefully giftcards come my way to splurge!
Went on a driving tour of Philadelphia the other day - purely unintentional, but never make the mistake of taking Germantown pike into the city - instead of henry ave. Duh. Amazing. Went with castingon to get a new kitty, who is still unnamed but the cutest thing ever. Went to Sophie's Yarns and managed to not buy anything - I wanted some major sock yarn but I have like 12 skeins already and I know that sock yarn doesn't count to stash enhancement, but for real this is getting a bit ridiculous!
OH! More good news, the boy has started working at Marvel Comics as of Thursday. He is an operations assistant in the publishing department, so he is working on the scheduling of the books to make sure everyone is doing what they are supposed to be doing. We are praying that Marvel decides to make this a full time position, as jc's 3 bosses are trying to convince Marvel that the position needs to exist. So hopefully by xmas he will be full time making a little more money and have heath benefits, etc.
Now to finish that sock....
I can't really think of a title for this entry. Things have been turned upside-down as of late. The boy lost his job, I'm still looking for a job, and bills are waving hello.
The job front is looking better now! I was contacted today by a recruiter from Smith Hanley, and she will be trying to place me with a firm in NYC (college board or scholastic or some others) as a data analyst. For now, I think I'm abandoning the pharmaceutical front in favor of business. I still believe I will go back for my phd in biostatistics, but for now, it's about paying the bills and getting some money saved for this wedding. But I think this is a pretty good start:
Huzzah! I will be doing a yarn post probably tomorrow about my visit to pittsburgh and the interesting visit and experience we had at the waterfront concerning the train tracks. More tomorrow :)
'Hi Sarah,
Here are a bunch of ideas that I had for you. All of them are in NYC except
MBS Insight. (which is located in Long Island, NY.)
Some of them may look a little senior, but if you are interested in the
company, we should still send you over. These companies are always looking
for recent grads, that are interested in getting into the analytical
industry.
I will follow up with you soon, but let me know what you think...Thanks!

Going up to Nyack on Wednesday to visit the boy. Going to try to stop by Yarns N' Notions in white plains and Knitting nation in Nyack. Also apartment scouting in White Plains as I've had some luck with applying for a position at Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. Hopefully taking some pictures in the next few days to share with yous.
Knitting wise: I'm at the heel flap for the first sock on 2 cir's but cannot find the book with the pattern in it - in a box in a garage or something horrible like that. plan is to copy the pattern while i'm at the mall from the book. hehe. so, until then I'm trying to finish my mom's scarf, done with manos and the my so called scarf pattern. The pink and white baby blanket is done and seamed, i just need to put on fringe and possibly crochet an edge on. then it's time to start on the blanket for the nephew that is on the way. hopefully get a start on that this weekend. yay.
okay, aside from the depressing sock news, things have been going swimmingly. I passed my oral comprehensive exam, Easter dinner was a success, and my schoolwork pile is growing exponentially. Taxes are done (even did my office manager's son's taxes for her - I'm getting like $10 for this hehe).
There is less than 3 weeks until I graduate with my Master's in Applied Statistics. Excited? Yes. Impatient? Extremely. I have senioritis (I think it still exists in graduate school). I force myself to go to class and now have to force myself to work on these assignments. Oh, have to pack too. I managed to score 14 boxes from the statistics department today, 3 from a restaurant that I am a regular at, and 2 from work. Amazing. I have to slowly bring them home (managed 4 today on the bus) and try to pack one a day. I'm starting to see how much stuff I have in my teeny little studio apartment, but hey, I've lived here for the last 4 years.
Hopefully the boy can come help me move, I've asked most of my guy friends to come help out, and I think I'm reserving the moving truck today.
Let's hope that I can empty out my dvr since I have like the entire Planet Earth mini series and a bunch of episodes of the riches to watch. There is always finals week ;)
I decided to sleep in and not go into work until around 1 today. Ah the beauty of being a graduate student assistant. Anyway, in the midst of doing laundry and re-potting plants, I decided to take those pictures that I promised Fluxx to show and example of the knitting styles. So here we are. The first two pictures are continental style, where the yarn is carried on the left hand, which really reminds me of how I carried the yarn for crocheting.
Next, is one picture of english style knitting, which is hard to take a picture of when you are right handed! The yarn is "thrown" around the needles with the right hand instead of "picked" off the yarn held in the left as in the continental style.
I'm really liking the continental for knitting stitch, but having a hard time with the purl stitch still. I need to practice more. Finding the time is the hard part.
I'm going to try to get some WIP pics up later on tonight.
We clearly have too much time on our hands.
